This page explains, in plain language, what information HostKey uses and what it does not. If anything here is unclear, please contact us using the details at the bottom.

The short version: HostKey helps a car owner give you a temporary key to their car. We never see or store your Tesla password. You type that only on Tesla's own website.

What this link holds

Read from the link you were sent, right now on your phone.

Nothing here leaves your phone unless you tap something that needs it.

Three things, and we'd rather be plain about them than reassuring:

  • Your name — so the host knows whose key it is.
  • Your phone number — it's how your key link reaches you, and how we tell you when the trip is ending.
  • How the car was driven during your trip — where it went, speed, hard braking, a possible impact, battery and alarm. This is the car reporting on itself, and the host sees it because it's their car.

Also your trip dates, so the key works only during them.

  • Your Tesla password. You enter it only on Tesla's website. HostKey never sees it.
  • Your payment or card details. HostKey does not handle payments for your trip.
  • Your location when you are not in the car. We see where the car is during a trip, never where you are.

We use this information only to give you a working key for your trip and to let the car owner manage their vehicles. We do not sell your information to anyone.

The owner of the car can see basic key activity for their own vehicle — for example, whether the key was set up and when the trip starts and ends. This is the same information any car owner would have.

Your key turns off automatically when your trip ends. You can also remove HostKey's access at any time from your Tesla account, under Third-Party Apps. When access ends, HostKey can no longer control the car.

Connections to Tesla use Tesla's secure sign-in. The permission HostKey receives is limited to what is needed to operate the car during your trip, and it can be removed by you or the owner.

Two years, then it's deleted. Trip records are kept that long because hosts rely on them for damage claims, insurance and disputes, which can surface long after a trip ends.

If you'd rather it went sooner, email privacy@gethostkey.com and we'll delete it. You don't need a reason.

Your Tesla connection is separate and shorter: it's removed the moment the trip ends or the host revokes your key.

HostKey is for adults who are able to rent and drive a vehicle. It is not intended for children.

If we update this policy, we will change the date at the top of this page.

We answer data requests from anyone, wherever you live, not only where the law requires it.
